Mary Jane Blige was born on the 11th of January, 1971, in a quiet town in New York. Later on, she moved to Savannah, Georgia, and spent her childhood there. Her mother, a Vietnam War Veteran, supported the entire family by working full-time as a nurse. Her father had left at a very early age. Blige had always been interested in the art of musical expression and singing and indulged herself wholeheartedly. She joined an ensemble called “Pride”, which she left shortly.

She was signed to Uptown Records in 1992, wherefrom she released her debut studio album, conveniently titled “What’s The 411?”. Overnight, the young American pop singer rose to stardom, with the debut album being charted at number six by the BillBoard 200. This one album alone won three platinum plaques from the RIAA, and peaked at number one on The Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
